Taking science outdoors

In Science this term, Year 5 have been learning all about ‘Properties and Changes of Materials’. We have been able to get really hands-on and explore different materials, learning lots of great new vocabulary with which to describe them and we can now confidently and accurately compare and group them too.

We have undertaken a range of investigations, including testing what happens to materials in water and finding out various ways of separating materials.

Last week, we took our science investigation outside and used the space of the playground to plan a test for which material was the best insulator (keeping things cold). All we had was a range of materials, ice cubes, containers and a ruler. We had to make a prediction, decide the best method to test our question and then record our results as we observed what changes took place.

It took lots of great team work and was lots of fun!
